TORAGUMA | TENKOHIME |
![]() Tiger-striped Survivor Toraguma was one of the original disciples of Shuten Douji -- the great oni of Mt. Oe -- who was once so powerful and influential with the oni and mountain youkai clans that they very nearly took over the old capital. Their might was almost unstoppable until Minamimoto no Yorimitsu and their band of "heroes" managed to do them in; beheading Shuten and severing Ibaraki's arms, leaving most of the original clan in shambles. Carrying the shame of their defeat, Toraguma simply refused to die. Instead, he burned with a passion to rebuild, to honor his former leader with a clan as vibrant and mighty as Shuten ever could have imagined. He carries with him that legacy and wears it proudly. He survived and will keep on surviving until every world knows the might of the Oni! Toraguma is passionate and emotional, quick to anger but also quick to laugh and even to weep. His favorite activity challenging his subordinates to drinking contests (he always wins) and will often step into the Arena himself for exhibition matches (he always wins). His ferocity and tenacity are infamous and are spoken of highly even by his enemies. | ![]() Never Hidden Tails Tenkohime claims to be the daughter of Tamamo no Mae. The infamous kitsune was part of a series of legends that saw Tamamo ingratiating herself with several emperors and dynasties in both Japan and China. Perhaps most famously, she was a courtesan under Emperor Toba towards the end of the Heian Era. In this time, she became embroiled in a conspiracy to end his reign. She was falsely (or correctly, depending on who you ask) accused of poisoning him and was exposed as a fox spirit, chased away and sealed within stone. That was her mother's legend, of course, but the legend doesn't mention her children. If you know what's good for you, you won't bring this up where she or any of her loyal servants can hear it. Tenkohime may be as beautiful and cunning as her mother ever was but she is far more openly ruthless and has little tolerance for those that would imply she hasn't earned the title of the Fox Princess. The Tamamo Clan, named in honor of her mother, seeks to create a world where her mother's tragedy never has to come to pass. "A world where a fox will not need to hide their tails", as she calls it. It's a lofty philosophy, even in a place like Jigokucho, but she holds to it. Tenkohime is surprisingly gracious about it and greets all of her workers warmly. She likes to play the part of everyone's "neesan", but make no mistake: she is the leader and will act accordingly. |
DAITENGU | THE ENMA |
![]() Spirit of the Mountain The Tengu Tribe was once subordinates of the Oni but, when Shuten Douji was defeated, that alliance crumbled and a new one started to rise in its place. The multiple tribes of mountain youkai all came together to form an alliance named for one of the most famous Tengu in history; Sutoku. Among them they selected a leader to hold the title of Daitengu, though details of just who that person was have remained a mystery. It's not even certain if the current Daitengu is the same Daitengu that founded the Alliance. In many ways: that's the point. The Daitengu is meant to be a position that is elevated above any single person or tribal interest. They exist as an entity apart from individuality and, thus, are seen as a representative of a whole rather than the ambitions or ideals of a single person. The Daitengu, as a person, is actually kind of fun to hang out with. Despite never taking off their mask, they are someone who loves simple pleasures. They are an avid photography buff, love reading tabloids, and can often be seen visiting their own karaoke bars (yes, the mask stays on when they sing). The mask is specially designed to allow them to eat and drink, as well, and the Daitengu is a known lover of sake and senbei. They usually have a bag of crisps hidden on their person. | ![]() Bastion of Order Sometimes called King Yama, sometimes the Honorable Yan-lo, but here he is simple known as "The Enma". While technically he is considered the "King" of Hell, he doesn't wear that particular title and instead thinks of himself as the Judge Arbiter; more fitting of his role. He is the one who accounts the sins of the dead, determines their labors, and assigns them to their proper afterlife. Trust us, the fact that the system is currently not working as it should be is nothing short of the most annoying thing he's dealt with in his life. The Enma is a man who values orderly procedure: things happening as planned, the predictability of a tightly formed schedule. He runs this city with the same attitude, having formed the Department of the Enma to extend his arms over the sprawling city as much as he could in order to keep a level of control. Things that disrupt his idea of orderly or predictable are dealt with swiftly, without grudge or remorse, to each their own degree. This, however, often takes forms that would seem extremely harsh, even cruel, to those not used to how the Enma does things. On a personal level, the Enma is almost impossible to actually know. He is certainly massive, standing heads above almost anyone in the city, and requires expertly tailored clothing as a result. His grooming is immaculate, his beard and hair trimmed precisely. He never seems to actually sleep, and seems perfectly kept at almost all points of the day, presenting an image of Absolute Order. That is, of course, until he gets angry... |
