What is Jigoku-cho?
Jigoku-cho is a panfandom roleplaying game that takes place in a modern city based in "Hell". It is a combination of Japanese fantasy and mythology, and modern crime drama. Yakuza meets Youkai!

Characters brought are "Lost Souls", regardless of whether they’ve actually died or not. They are then assigned to one of four factions. Each faction serves a different role within the world. The game’s story and plot will focus around the goals of these factions and how the friction between them will shape this world. The ultimate goal of these “Lost Souls” is to work their way into earning their ticket home, to resurrection, or even another desire their heart desperately wants.

Welcome to Hell, kids.

You can find more information on the Premise Page, the basics are continued below.

What are the Factions?
There are four factions in Jigoku-cho in total. Each faction has their own leader and district within the city.

  • The Shuten Clan are mostly Oni. They control the gambling and sports district.
  • The Tamamo Clan are mostly Kyuubi. They control the pleasure and restaurant districts.
  • The Sutoku Alliance are Tengu and Kappa. They control the finance and entertainment district, as well as much of the city utilities.
  • The Department of the Enma are mostly Shinigami of various sorts. They control administration and law enforcement.
There’s more info on these factions and their leaders on the Premise Page.

How are characters assigned to Factions?
Most importantly, you cannot choose which faction your character is assigned to.

In the interest of game balance and in keeping with how the lore of the game works, mods will be assigning factions based on the character’s application.

Can my character change what Faction they’re in?
There are possibilities that can be facilitated by in-game progress and actions. It’s considered a Very Big Deal in-game if a character switches what faction they’re in.

Can my character refuse to be in a Faction?
As mentioned on the Premise Page, becoming "factionless" is considered a violation of a character’s contract with their assigned faction. Breaking oaths is a high crime deserving of severe punishment: up to and including exile from the city itself. For OOC purposes, this is something the mods will only consider under very specific circumstances. It will render most characters unable to interact with the rest of the game, simply waiting to die in the wastelands of Outer Hell.

The Contract
It should be emphasized that the contract and its promised reward is a narrative device. Characters in game will never actually receive their contract payment while still in game; the in-univers assumption being that characters are sent back to their world/timeline with their reward when the contract is complete. Therefore we encourage players to not feel limited in what their character is asking for; it's supposed to be impossible. As a narrative device, they are simply the thing what gets a character to agree to be here and participate as part of a faction.

Housing
There will be no “assigned housing” in this game on an OOC level, but characters are assigned housing on an IC level. We’ll leave it up to the players themselves how that pans out. However, it is worth noting that without some capital (either money or social clout), characters will generally not have great living conditions when they first enter the game. That’s the rookie life, after all.

Can characters die?
Given that this is Hell, characters are kind of already considered dead. That said, yes, characters can die within the game. There will be avenues to resurrection for characters that are killed, it comes at considerable cost to their faction and will saddle the character with a debt that will follow them for the rest of the game, if they opt for that path. Otherwise, assume any potential death is permanent.

Is adult content allowed? Can I play smut in this game, or involve my character in drugs or other sordid topics?
Yes. Adult content will be part of the game’s events, though it will never be the only option, and we want to emphasize that. If you do not want to play out adult situations in this game: you do not have to. But if you are uncomfortable with adult content, this may not be the game for you. Jigoku-cho may not be focused solely on adult content, but it will be a fairly consistent part of the game.

What characters are appable here?
We accept all canon characters, CRAUs (characters with previous game history factored in), OCs, and canon AU characters. Our definition of canon AU is alternative versions of characters from published works. For example; one can app both the MCU version of Spider-Man AND the Lord & Miller animated universe Spider-man (and variations thereof).

Do all characters start as rookies or can they have early advantages?
All characters start as rookies. Some may advance through the ranks faster than others based on in-character actions and plot participation but every single character comes in at the same level.

How old can characters be?
In general, we want characters to be at least 16. There is a suitability section within the application that will be a greater factor in determining this than a number.

My character has special powers/abilities/weapons/etc. Can they keep them?
All characters are heavily depowered upon entering the game. They will find that if they had special abilities in the past they will be an exceptionally weak version of them and unable to do much of anything, if at all. Remarkable equipment and tools are also missing. However, by working with their faction, characters will be able to regain these (or gain special powers and equipment they never had before). All of this is detailed in the Rewards Page.

Does my character need to know Japanese?
Nah. This is Hell, after all. Even though all the signs are in Japanese, your character will still find themselves able to read it. How they manage this seems to be a secret only the Enma really knows, but it’s honestly not an important detail.

When can I reserve/apply?
Reserves will open last week of an application month (every other month) and applications will open a week after that.

When do applications open?
Applications open on the first of every other month. The TDM and Reserve period begin roughly a week prior. Applications are open for a week and Reserves will expire five days into that period.

Are TDMs canon to the game?
TDMs will factor into game-canon (though obviously what factions you play your character as being part of in the TDM could change once they are apped into the game, so keep this in mind).

What does the two month cycle of game look like?
As it stands now, the basic gameflow is like this;
  • TDM and RESERVES - Week before previous month's end
  • APPS - First week of Month 1
  • OPENING MINGLE and SUBSTORIES - During app week or right at the end, depending on mod schedules
  • MINI-EVENT - Middle of Month 1
  • MAIN EVENT - Start of Month 2
  • FURTHER PLOT DEVELOPMENTS - Throughout Month 2 as needed
  • TDM and RSERVES - Last week of Month 2
  • And so on and so forth like that. Obviously this isn't a perfect schedule and open to evolve further, but we think this lays things out well enough.

    What are the activity requirements?
You can find the activity requirements detailed on the rules page.

Activity is turned in via the Permanent Activity Check page.

Are there gamewide events? When do they occur?
Gamewide events – large, plot relevant happenings – occur during months where applications are not open, usually within the first week of that month. If, for any reason, we are unable to have the event ready within that time frame we will let the players know, both via plurk and a message on the OOC community.

Are there "quests" in this game?
Yes, though we call them "substories". These are optional scenarios that players can engage with that are posted at the end of the application period. They will range either from simple diversions to faction-based missions. Participation in these substories, as well as events, will help earn rewards for characters in the game.

    What is the reward system?
Any thread that is AC length (see the Rules page) posted in relation to a substory or during an event can be used to submit for rewards. These can range from simple material goods, to earning back special powers (or gaining new ones, for characters that have none), to gaining influence within your faction and raising through the ranks. For more information, see the Rewards page.

Do I need to use the reward system to participate in the game’s plot?
Characters do not strictly need to engage with the rewards system in order to engage with the game’s metaplot, as there will be things like sign-ups and RNG draws. However, engaging with the rewards system will make it easier to do so, and characters who have gained a certain amount of influence (either by cashing that in as their reward, or doing consistent work that is related to the plot) will have opportunities to do things they would not be able to otherwise.

Is the network exclusive to Lost Souls?
The messaging and blogging system used by the Lost Souls is exclusive to them and to faction officials. However, it is simply one part of a whole internet ecosystem within Jigoku-cho. Characters are free to react to internet-happenings that aren’t on this specific network, but generally anything posted to the network is not viewable by the general native citizenry of Jigoku-cho (again, save for the faction officials that are also allowed there).

How do characters access the network?
Smartphones! If they didn’t have one coming in, they definitely have one now. They are provided upon getting their contracts. It’s just an app on the phone, but it can be accessed from home computers as well. Basically any device with an internet connection can work.

What type of entries can go on the network?
Text, Voice, and Video. Generally any device has the functionality needed to do all three, but obviously which device you’re using will impact the quality of those posts.

    Can the network be hacked?
Without a more thorough understanding of how the internet and digital information even works in Jikgoku-cho the current answer is “No”. This might change as inclined characters develop but, for now, the Lost Soul network is very secure.

    Is anonymous posting allowed?
Yes, anonymous posting is allowed, though it’s not true "anonymous" as the network administrators in each Faction can generally find out who posted what based on device and location. But if you were posting anything they cared enough to confront you on, you at least have a head start to try hiding yourself!
